Capacity-wise, the domestic alkaline electrolyzer market remained at 35.77 GW this week, with no new capacity added. In terms of deliveries, Shanghai Hydrogen Era Technology Co., Ltd. delivered four 1050 Nm³/h units to the China Energy Engineering Songyuan Hydrogen Industry Park project. Zhongji Zhongdian (Yangzhou) Hydrogen Equipment Co., Ltd. successfully delivered a complete 1000 Nm³/h alkaline water electrolysis hydrogen production set, including a 1000 Nm³/h electrolyzer, separation skid, purification skid, and other supporting equipment. Last week, Sany Hydrogen customized and delivered a 200 Nm³/h PEM electrolysis hydrogen refueling station to an Australian customer. LONGi Hydrogen delivered two 1000 Nm³/h electrolyzers to Australia, while Wolong Innod delivered a megawatt-class AEM electrolyzer, with the delivery destination not yet obtained. Anzhuo Hydrogen Energy delivered one 1000 Nm³/h alkaline unit to Australia, and Xibeiyou Hydrogen Energy delivered one 1000 Nm³/h unit to a green hydrogen project in Jilin. On the PEM front, Hydrogen Hui Energy delivered a 50 Nm³/h unit to Europe. By March 20, 2025, domestic companies (including overseas deliveries) had delivered a total of 10 MW of alkaline electrolyzers (data sourced from public information).

Orders for electrolyzers, as of this week, Xinjiang Shaneng Chemical publicly tendered for 120,000 Nm³/h water electrolysis hydrogen production, with the project divided into five phases, each with a capacity of 24,000 Nm³/h, and the bid inviter being Yankuang Xinjiang Energy. The Huaneng Taonan Wind and Solar Power to Methanol Project received approval, with an overall plan to produce 300,000 tons of green methanol annually. Gansu Junrui Wuwei Liangzhou New Energy Large-Scale Green Hydrogen Production Project tendered for 56 sets of electrolysis equipment; Shanghai Taiqingchen purchased 1000 standard cubic meters of alkaline electrolyzers from Seraph Rebuild Hydrogen Energy; Jiangsu Shuangliang New Energy Equipment Co., Ltd. signed a green hydrogen project with Hongyang New Energy Development Group Jilin Co., Ltd., with a total planned green hydrogen capacity of 72,000 standard cubic meters, equipped with 5000, 3000, and 2000 standard cubic meter alkaline electrolyzers.

Policy updates

  1. The General Authority for Investment and Free Zones in Egypt recently announced the launch of the largest green hydrogen plant project in the Middle East in South Sinai, with a total investment of $17 billion, and a planned annual capacity of 400,000 tons of green hydrogen.
  2. The European Commission approved a €4 billion special fund for electrolyzers, providing a 30% subsidy on equipment costs for projects with a capacity ≥500 MW/year, and setting a 2030 green hydrogen project electrolyzer efficiency target of ≥60% (LHV basis).
  3. China's National Energy Administration released the "Alkaline Electrolyzer Energy Efficiency Limiting Standards," mandating that new projects have a hydrogen production energy consumption ≤4.3 kWh/Nm³, and off-grid hydrogen production projects enjoy a 0.15 yuan/kWh electricity price discount.

Corporate News

  1. Three days after winning the tender, the Second Construction Engineering Co., Ltd. of China Construction Third Engineering Bureau had its bid urgently suspended by the tenderer, Liaoning Huifa Green Energy New Energy Co., Ltd., which demanded the cancellation of the entire tendering activity. The specific reason was not disclosed.
  2. US green hydrogen technology company Plug Power plans to collaborate with Australia's AGA to provide 2GW of PEM electrolyzers for a green hydrogen and chemical project in Uzbekistan, which is expected to receive an investment of $5.5 billion.
  3. ThyssenKrupp (Germany) has initiated the construction of an electrolyzer factory in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with a planned annual capacity of 5GW. The factory will adopt a modular alkaline electrolyzer design, aiming to reduce the target cost to €350/kW.
  4. Cummins (US) has completed the acquisition of the UK's ITM Separator Technologies, gaining access to patented technology for a new-type organic-inorganic composite separator.
  5. According to Qichacha, Hydrogen Energy (Hebei) Technology Co., Ltd. was established with a registered capital of 5 million yuan. The company is held by Fengqing Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd., Baoding Hongcheng Converter Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Chongqing Juzheng Electromechanical Co., Ltd., and others.

Patent Applications

  1. The Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (China) has disclosed patent CN2025110028, which involves the R&D of a ceramic-based anion exchange membrane. The membrane has demonstrated a laboratory-tested lifespan of 80,000 hours.
  2. Johnson Matthey (UK) has submitted patent WO2025109876, disclosing the formulation of a Fe-Ni-Mo ternary non-precious metal catalyst with activity approaching that of platinum-based materials.

Technological Advancements

  1. Cockerill Jingli (China) has completed the field testing of a "start-stop enhanced" alkaline electrolyzer, achieving up to 20 start-stop cycles per day. The energy consumption for the Inner Mongolia project is 4.15kWh/Nm³.
  2. Nel Hydrogen (Norway) has launched the new-generation PEM electrolyzer, HySyner500, which increases the current density to 5A/cm² and reduces the material cost per unit of capacity by 22%.
